# Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common things people bring to therapy — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's what it is, why it happens, and what actually helps.

## What anxiety is

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived danger — the body's built-in alarm system. In small doses it keeps you alert and focused. It becomes a problem when the alarm fires too often, too strongly, or in situations that aren't actually threatening.

This is the "fight or flight" response: your heart races, your breath quickens, your muscles tense — your body preparing to act, even when there's nothing to run from.

## Common forms it takes

GeneralizedPersistent worry across many areas of life, often without a clear trigger. PanicSudden, intense waves of fear that can arrive without warning. SocialFear of being judged, embarrassed, or watched in social situations. PhobiasIntense fear of a specific object or situation — heights, flying, animals.

## What helps

- **Slow your breathing.** Long, slow exhales tell your nervous system the danger has passed.
- **Come back to the present.** Grounding in your senses interrupts the spiral of anxious thoughts.
- **Question the thought.** Ask: what's the evidence, and how likely is the worst case, really?
- **Move your body.** Walking, stretching, or any movement burns off the stress response.
- **Be kind to yourself.** Anxiety isn't a flaw or a failure. Feeling it doesn't mean something is wrong with you.
