Motivational Interviewing: A Practical Introduction for Therapists
About Course
Course description
Most of us learned motivational interviewing (MI) somewhere along the way, then quietly drifted from it under the pressure of full caseloads. This refresher brings you back to the core of the method and updates it to the 2023 fourth edition, where Miller and Rollnick broadened MI from helping people change to helping people change and grow.
Who this is for
Licensed and pre-licensed therapists, counselors, social workers, and other behavioral health clinicians who want a working refresher on MI.
Learning objectives
- Define motivational interviewing and distinguish it from advice-giving and the fixing reflex.
- Describe the four elements of the MI spirit as revised in the fourth edition: empowerment, partnership, acceptance, and compassion.
- Identify the four tasks of MI (engaging, focusing, evoking, planning) and apply OARS micro-skills within them.
- Differentiate change talk from sustain talk using the DARN-CAT framework and respond to sustain talk and discord without arguing for change.
CE credit
1 contact hour. Estimated time 60 minutes. Passing score on the post-test: 80 percent. Written to meet ASWB ACE and NBCC content expectations; awarding credit requires current provider standing.
